This page explains exactly how we research, test, and evaluate every software product we cover on Hubkub — so you know what our reviews are actually based on.

Our Two Review Types: Hands-On and Source-Verified
Hubkub publishes two clearly labeled kinds of software coverage. A hands-on review means we downloaded, installed, or directly tested the product on real hardware for that review or update. A official-source review means we re-checked official product pages, documentation, release notes, checksums, or other primary-source evidence when a fresh hands-on retest was not performed for that update. We do not write reviews from press kits, marketing copy, or vague summaries alone, and we do not present a official-source review as if it were a fresh lab retest.
Our testing environment uses a Windows 11 PC for Windows software and Android devices for mobile applications when a review is hands-on. Where macOS or other platforms are relevant, we note whether our direct testing covered those platforms or whether we are summarizing documented behavior from official sources instead.
How We Verify Download Safety
Reader safety is our first priority. Before any download link appears in a Hubkub article, we verify the official source first and then apply additional checks depending on the review type:
- We confirm the official source — We verify the download link points to the official developer website or an authorized distribution platform (such as the Microsoft Store, Google Play, or the Mac App Store). We do not link to third-party download aggregators or mirror sites.
- For hands-on reviews, we may run a VirusTotal scan — When we directly test an installer for that review or update, we may document a VirusTotal result or note any follow-up verification required.
- For hands-on reviews, we may verify the file signature — Where available, we may confirm that the installer is digitally signed by the software developer and say when that check was last performed.
- For official-source reviews, we say what was not re-tested — If a fresh VirusTotal scan, signature check, or install test was not rerun for the current update, we state that directly instead of implying fresh hands-on proof.
We always recommend that readers download software only from the official links we provide and run their own antivirus check before installation.
Our Rating Criteria
When we rate or compare software, we evaluate it against the following criteria:
- Ease of installation — How straightforward is the download and setup process for a non-technical user?
- Core feature performance — Does the software do what it claims to do, reliably and without excessive bugs?
- Free tier value — How much genuine utility does the free version offer before hitting paywalls or restrictions?
- System requirements — Does the software run without notable performance impact on typical consumer hardware?
- Safety and privacy — Does the software come from a reputable developer? Does the installer include bundled software or unwanted adware?
- Official support and documentation — Does the developer provide adequate help resources and maintain the product actively?
- Alternatives — How does this tool compare to the best alternatives in its category?
What We Cover in Each Review
Every full software review or download guide on Hubkub aims to include the following information, with the review type made explicit near the top of the article:
- Review type label: hands-on review or official-source review
- Current version number and release date
- File size and supported operating systems
- Official download link (developer’s website only)
- Key features with honest notes on what works well and what doesn’t
- Pros and cons based on direct testing when hands-on, or clearly labeled source analysis when source-verified
- Free vs. paid tier comparison (where applicable)
- Comparison to major alternatives
- Frequently asked questions based on real user queries
Our Update Policy
Software changes. When a major new version of a product we have reviewed is released, we update our review to reflect the new version. This includes:
- Updating version numbers, file sizes, and feature lists
- Re-testing features that have changed significantly when the update is hands-on
- Adding a visible “Last Updated” date to the article header
- Noting what changed from the previous version we reviewed
- Stating clearly when a refresh is source-verified rather than a fresh install retest
Minor version updates (bug fixes, small patches) may not trigger a full review update, but we update download links and version numbers as needed.
Disclosure: Affiliate-Free Reviews, No Paid Coverage
Hubkub does not accept payment for reviews or favorable coverage. Our editorial positions — ratings, recommendations, comparisons — are not for sale. Specifically:
- No paid reviews — Software developers cannot pay to receive a review, a positive review, or a higher rating on Hubkub
- No review-for-access deals — If a developer provides free access to a paid product for review purposes, this is disclosed in the article, but it does not influence our conclusions
- No sponsored rankings — The order in which we list or compare tools is based on our editorial assessment, not commercial relationships
- Affiliate links (where present) — Some articles may contain affiliate links that earn Hubkub a commission if a reader makes a purchase. These are disclosed clearly and do not affect which products we recommend or how we rate them. We do not recommend products we would not use ourselves.
